From the crib into old age there is one habit that we all share. That habit is stretching before we get out of bed in the morning.

Because the harder we stretch the better it feels we often put our bodies through unnatural contortions and gyrations in order to achieve that contented feeling.

At night while we sleep our body relaxes and the inflammation that was generated during the day subsides. This is usually what allows us to stretch without pain in the morning.

By over-stretching in the morning we separate or loosen the injured components in our body that tried to heal over night, and this makes them more susceptible to strain during the day, which contributes to the causes of back pain.

The loss of muscle tone that increases as we age leaves the spine less supported, so it is less immune to the stresses caused by abnormal movement.

The same consideration should be given to our muscles and tendons. Aging depletes them of having the elasticity they once had, and subjects them to injury from any abnormal movement. Even young athletes take the time to do warm-up exercises before they stress their bodies.
